On being treated "like a human being"

Was hanging out, as we often do, in a chatroom on stickam. A conversation came up about gender, and it got weird quick; one thing led to another and the “treat someone like a human being” thing came up. So i said the following:

The “being treated like a human being” thing is weird. You hear a lot of personal advocacy groups say “we just want to be treated like human beings!” and their opposition claims, “of course! what else would you be?” The problem comes in where “treating someone like a human being” does not always equate “treating someone with respect.”

I might expound on this later. It’s too late at the moment, and the stickam conversation just got so silly that i’m just beyond words.
