Old family photos

As much as i love posting pictures of places and things, i’m somewhat protective of pictures of my immediate family. I had a few pictures of my dad and brother hanging out on my brother’s porch, but i didn’t like that it showed enough background landmarks to determine whereabouts he lives… so i chose to not post them. I wish i’d managed to get some indoor pictures so i could have posted something. That’s on my to-do list for the next time i visit, because i like seeing their smiling faces.

When i was in Chicago, my dad and i went through my grandma’s enormous box of family photos. In that box are hundreds of pictures – even some old daguerreotypes. I took pictures of some of them until i realized there were just too many, at which point i started scanning them in on my parents’ computer. I emailed them to myself, and just took an hour or two to crop ‘em, clean them up, and now i’m posting them.

So, in chronological order, there are oodles of my family pictures behind the cut.

These daguerreotypes were taken in St. Catherine’s in 1881. We’re not 100% sure who all is who in these pictures; the left one was labeled, “William J D******, St. Catherine’s, September 30th 1881″. The Right one is simply labeled, “A. D******”.

This is my grandma’s grandfather, quite the handsome fellow. I love his eyes. Not entirely sure of his full name, but i think i have it written down somewhere.

My grandma, in 1937:

My dad’s parents, in 1940. I think my grandpa looks kind of like a gangster in this picture. I think it’s the hat. An interesting side note: can you tell that at the time, this was considered an interracial marriage? It shocked many of their friends, and he was disowned by his family for it.

My parents, rockin’ the hippie look in 1971. Dad moreso than mom, what with the hair and all.

Another picture from 1971. My mom had painted their fridge. She also painted the same design on the crib that my brother and i used. I should ask her if it meant anything in particular to her or whether she just liked the design. In any case, she’s a fantastic artist, and i’ve always envied her ability to paint and draw well. I have to satisfy myself with photoshop because i did not inherit the drawing/painting ability gene.
