Two Ways in Which Teeth Cleaning Products Work

Within recent years the market has been flooded with teeth whitening products made from a number of formulations from companies around the world. Some are, of course, better than others and while they may have the same core ingredients, the percentages will most likely vary from product to product. In an effort to educate the public, the American Dental Association decided to detail exactly what types of products are available so that consumers could make an educated decision when buying this type of whitening agent. What they determined was that there are two basic categories and simply put, one type of whitening solution is only effective on surface stains while the other has a deep cleaning bleaching effect.

Cleaning Surface Stains with Dentifrices

For decades most of the major toothpaste companies have manufactured some form of dentifrice. This is simply a toothpaste that is meant to scrub stains from the surface of the tooth. Most often this type of formulation has a gritty texture that can actually erode the surface enamel on your teeth over time. Most dentists no longer recommend these abrasive toothpastes for this very reason. While they can get nasty stains off the surface of your teeth, at what cost? They can quickly lead to tooth decay. However, it should be noted that there are some dentifrices that do have the approval of the ADA and these are the ones that have a less abrasive formulation.

Bleaching Agents in Whitening Products

The second category of teeth whitening products are made with a bleaching agent, most often carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide in varying strengths. These come in gels to be used with or without trays, pastes and strips. Depending on which has the formulation you are looking for and level of comfort when applying, there are a number of products to choose from. Even so, it is imperative that you check out the exact ingredients, active and inactive, and then compare what you find between several manufacturers to get the best quality and yes, the best price.

So how important is your smile? If you are truly looking for radiant, whiter and brighter teeth, you’ll go for a bleaching agent which, in the long run, is deemed to be the better choice for your teeth. Do a comparison. Choose which is right for you and within a few applications you should begin to see the smile you are looking for.
